About Lake Basin Development Authority
The Lake Basin Development Authority (LBDA) is a Regional Development Agency established in 1979 under an Act of Parliament Cap 442 to spearhead sustainable development in the Kenyan portion of Lake Victoria Basin. The Authority is empowered to undertake integrated planning, coordination and implementation of sustainable socio-economic programs in the Western Kenya region covering former Nyanza, Western and parts of Rift Valley Provinces) whose coverage area is spread over a span of 18 counties (15 fully and 3 partially). This area covers some 42,000 Km2 which is 6.8 percent of Kenya’s land area but houses more than about 17 million people which is about 42% of Kenya’s Population. It is therefore one of the most densely populated regions of the country with a maximum population density of approximately 1,200 people/km2. It is endowed with abundant land and water resources with 3 out of the 5 major water towers in Kenya located in the region. Unlike many other parts of the country, more than two thirds of the land and soils are either classified as high or medium potential and suitable for high agricultural productivity that could enhance food security. The potential of these resources is however threatened by environment degradation and attendant threats of climate change which requires sustainable conservation strategies. To curb this LBDA has over the years successfully implemented a number of projects which include the Rural Domestic water supply, Kimira Oluch Small Holder
