Omina Otsieno Enterprise is a sustainable and eco-friendly fashion brand that specializes in Jewellery made from banana fibre. Environmental pollution is the most pressing problem in the world today including in my country Kenya, with the fashion industry being the second most polluting with a production that makes up 10% of humanity's carbon emissions. Our Sustainable fashion is helping address some of these issues because jewellery is something that everyone needs and uses making fashion an accessible avenue for an average person to effect change. We make jewellery from banana fibre extracted from the banana stem. The process of our production begins right from harvesting the stem, extraction of the fibre to weaving the jewellery. This has opened up an opportunity for women in my rural home of Busia as well as farmers and brass artisans in Nairobi for their economic empowerment. The Marachi culture in Busia County is one of the most traditional, ethical and sustainable. Hand-woven baskets have served countless purposes. As agricultural tools, they were used to process and store grain and carry food to market. Every piece of our jewellery is unique, timeless and tells a story; the weaves and twists of each piece are inspired by the traditional hand-woven baskets and ropes. Our product helps uphold the traditional craftsmanship culture of basket weaving by repurposing it and using it as the inspiration behind our jewellery.
