Kenyan Coffee Finds New Buyers as Export Landscape Shifts

Kenyan coffee exporters have fresh reason for optimism as the 2024/2025 coffee year confirms what industry watchers have been anticipating for months: America is buying more Kenyan coffee than ever, and the reasons why offer a useful lesson for exporters eyeing further diversification.

According to Agriculture and Food Authority data, Kenya's coffee export earnings from the United States more than doubled in the first quarter of 2025, rising 101.2 percent to USD 40.8 million from USD 19.01 million a year earlier. The jump was driven by higher export volumes and deeper penetration into America's lucrative specialty coffee market, with the US absorbing 43.2 percent of Kenya's total coffee exports during the quarter, by far the largest share taken by any single buyer.

The surge coincided with the renewal of Kenya's preferential access to the US market under the African Growth and Opportunity Act in February, which preserved duty-free access for thousands of Kenyan products and removed the uncertainty that had been clouding exporter confidence over whether the trade arrangement would lapse without a replacement framework. That renewed certainty appears to have sustained buyer confidence and encouraged longer-term supply contracts. The effect was significant enough that coffee overtook apparel as Kenya's leading export to the American market last year — a first, driven by a surge in specialty coffee demand and record international prices. American buyers have also deepened direct relationships with Kenyan cooperatives and estates, reducing reliance on intermediary traders and shortening the supply chain between farm and roaster.

For the full coffee year, this momentum held. US-bound volumes grew nearly 37 percent, and value rose over 46 percent, cementing America's position as Kenya's single largest export destination by value, with a 21.4 percent share, ahead of longstanding partner Belgium. Germany, Korea and Canada rounded out the top five destinations. Exporters with existing relationships with American specialty roasters have an obvious opening to deepen those ties, while those without a foothold there should treat AGOA's renewal as a standing invitation rather than a temporary window, particularly as global coffee markets remain tight and buyers continue paying premiums for traceable, high-quality Arabica beans.

The growth story is not confined to North America. Thirteen entirely new markets imported Kenyan coffee for the first time this year, among them Israel, Portugal, Ireland, Hong Kong and Venezuela, marking Kenya's first meaningful entry into the South American market. None of these are large by volume yet, but each represents genuine diversification away from the handful of buyers Kenya has traditionally depended on. France deserves particular attention: volumes there nearly quintupled over the year, the sharpest proportional gain among any of Kenya's top ten destinations, pointing to fast-growing demand among French roasters for Kenyan specialty lots. Poland also broke into the top ten for the first time on the back of strong value growth. Not every market moved in Kenya's favour, however: Korea and Sweden both recorded significant declines in purchased volumes, a reminder that exporters concentrated in either market should actively diversify rather than assume a rebound.

On the compliance front, exporters targeting the European Union, still the destination for just over half of Kenya's export volume, have reason for cautious confidence. Kenya's established traceability systems and regulatory framework are positioning the sector to meet the EU's Deforestation Regulation requirements, which take on added strategic importance given how much of Kenya's coffee still moves through the European market. Exporters shipping to the EU should ensure their own documentation, and farm-level records keep pace with these evolving requirements as the compliance deadline approaches.
