Osaka, Japan: 10th September 2025 – The Kenya Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka today hosted an event to showcase the country’s nut industry, one of the fastest-growing sectors in its agricultural export portfolio. Visitors were able to sample premium Kenyan macadamia nuts, while learning about the industry’s role in improvement of economy, international trade, and sustainable farming practices.
Kenya is the third-largest producer of macadamia nuts globally, contributing approximately 13% of global supply with her global ranking in world exports standing at number 3 globally. Kenya is currently ranked among the world’s top macadamia producers, with more than 500,000 smallholder farmers engaged in nut cultivation across central, coastal, and eastern regions. The Total Area (Ha) grew from 10,849.0 Hectares in 2023 to 11,090.0 Hectares in 2024 representing 2.22% growth. The nuts command interest in international markets, particularly in United States, Netherlands, Germany, Vietnam, China and Japan which together account for 86.1% of Kenya's macadamia exports, with Japanese consumers increasingly recognizing Kenyan macadamias for their exceptional taste and quality. Between 2023 and 2024, Kenya earned KES 7.6 billion from exporting 46,400 tonnes of macadamia in 2023 compared 51,200 tonnes in 2024. This growth has been driven by expansion into new growing regions and increased investment. Cashew and peanut farming are also gaining momentum as value chains strengthen to meet growing global demand.
The event provided an opportunity for the visitors to experience the unique flavor profile of the Kenyan macadamia nuts while also highlighting the country’s commitment to quality and traceability. Japanese visitors were engaged with information on post-harvest handling, value addition, and compliance with international standards. Discussions underscored how Kenya’s nut sector aligns with Japan’s consumer preference for healthy, natural, and ethically sourced food products.
The nut sector illustrates how agriculture can support both rural transformation and international trade. By presenting our products at Expo 2025 Osaka, Kenya is providing visitors with a direct
connection to the farmers and communities behind Kenya’s export story. This event is part of Kenya’s broader engagement at Expo 2025 Osaka, where the Pavilion has already attracted over 1.5 million visitors. The Kenya pavilion will be hosting several activities to spotlight Kenya’s strengths in agriculture, tourism, and innovation, while building stronger trade and cultural linkages with Japan and the global community.
