Borana

• The Borana traditional dress is made from goat and sheepskins. Three sheep were needed to make a complete garment for a woman.
• For the majority of the members of the tribe, the staple diet is milk and meat and sometimes blood as other foods are considered Taboo
• Islam has become influential in Borana society in the last 20 years.

Walwana

• A marginalized tribal group in Tana riverKnown for their fishing activities in the river
• They are also known as Malakote and considered to be part of the Pokomo group.
• Kenya’s national anthem is derived from a lullaby in this tribal group. The Walwanaculture is rich in folk tales, songs, dances
• There is astrong influence of Pokomo culture in today;s Swahili culture as the Pokomo’s intermarried with the coastal Arabs. One of the languages among the Walwana is a precursor to the Kiswahili Language

Kenyan Arabs

• A large percentage of the Kenyan Arabic population dwells in the coastal area.
• Coastal Arab villages consist of tiny houses that are situated closely together. The nature of the villages reflects the closeness of the families
• The Arabs are considered to be modest and this is apparent in their dressing. Women mostly wear diraqs, burkhas and hijabs to show their modesty.
• Arabs in Kenya are 99% Muslim and follow Islamic teachings and celebrate holidays special to the religion
• Arabic dance and song is popular among the Islamic majority in Kenya and Swahili songs borrow from this as well
